- *How to get a resolution of 724x566 without buying a new monitor*
- By Philip Goddard
-
- $VER: 0.9 NTSC
-
- *This is identical to OverRes.lha, but it's the NTSC-compatible version.
- It has been tested using the NTSC sync rate, so good luck :) *

-
- *Intro:*
-
- This problem, I suspect, of low-resolution screenmodes, has plagued us fairly-low
- end users for some time now, so I decided to write this in order to show people how
- to gain a resolution like mine (http://www.amethyst.demon.co.uk/personal/phil/wblg.png).
-
- This does NOT require ANY new monitor drivers, or even a new monitor- you can do this
- with a Phillips CM8833II, or a Commodore 1084S standard monitor. I have tried (and use)
- this on my Phillips, but not on the Commodore that I have in the house. It should
-
- *Disclaimer (PLEASE READ!!):*
-
- I accept NO responsibility for ANY damage caused by this kludge, or by you fiddling
- with your monitor controls. If you blow it up (which is just soooo unlikely...) by
- fiddling, then I cannot (and will not) accept ANY responsibility. This kludge works perfectly
- on my system.
-
- Once again, I do NOT accept responsibility for ANY damage, direct or indirect by use of
- this system.
-
- Thanks!
-
- <Phew!>
-
- *Requirements:*
-
- An Amiga (well, obviously)
- AGA/ECS chipset (not CGFX- c'mon, do you really need this? :-)
- Sufficient Chip Ram for the screenmode
- The overscan.prefs file (included)
- A monitor which has:
-
- o Vertical size and positioning controls
- o Horizontal size and positioning controls
-
- A few minutes of fiddling with a screwdriver (or your thumb)
-
- *How to do it:*
-
- Firstly, copy the overscan.prefs file into your ENVARC:SYS directory (or run the small
- script included in this file). Then, reboot.
-
- When you have rebooted, open up your Screenmode settings in the SYS:Prefs drawer, and
- run it. If the screenmode that you're running in doesn't say something like "Hires
- Interlaced: 724 x 566", then it hasn't worked, and you'll need to mail me (address at
-
- To recap, if you were originally running Hires Interlaced, then it should still say
- that, as well as having a larger screen size to select.
-
- If you were running in something else, then it might say something different, but still
- give you more screen size to play with.
-
- DON'T WORRY that your probably screen looks very strange at the moment (you can't see
- the edges, and it has "moved"), this is because it's now running in Maximum Overscan mode,
- and you need to reset your display.
-
- Take a small screwdriver (or a working thumb), and twiddle the size and positioning controls
- on your monitor until the display has been shrunk down to fit your screen, and looks OK.
-
- And that's it! No, really, that's all there is to it. You can now enjoy a nice big 724 x 566
- resolution, and it only took a few minutes. :)
-
- *Known caveats:*
-
- You will find that, for games that don't use this resolution, that the display will probably
- be in the center of the screen, or slightly offset, with a whacking great black border
- around the edges. This (I find) makes hardly any difference, and you can still play the games
- as before, just the same.
-
- *How it works:*
-
- It's very simple really, all you're doing is forcing the Amiga's video hardware to run in
- Overscan mode, used sometimes for TV work. You can change the amount of new resolution through
- the Overscan Prefs, by dragging the black boxes around.
-
- The maximum resolution you can get Workbench to run in is 724 x 566, PPaint or DPaint may
- state that you can go higher, but this is only for these programs, and not for Workbench itself.
-
- There's no hacked monitor drivers involved, so there's no risk to your system (please
- read the disclaimer though). I'll be getting a GFX card soon (the Permedia 2 PPC card,
- after the PPC accelerator...), so after using this for a long time, I thought it would be nice
- to share it with Amigans who are stuck on 640 x 512 :)
-
- Programs that opened a Hires Interlaced screen before should (knock wood) open at the new
- resolution perfectly. DOpus 4/Magellan, Wordworth, etc.
-
- Running this new resolution on Voyager NG, or Wordworth, is a joy- miles more space, and
- close as dammit to 800 x 600 that you'll get with one of these old monitors. Try running
- Magellan in this size, with NewIcons v4.1 and you'll know true happiness! At least, until you
- get a GFX card.. :)
-
-
- Have fun!
